Sample the Sierra: Food & Wine Festival
Every September, Bijou Community Park fills with the region’s best chefs, wineries, and breweries — minutes from Tahoe Reset.
Sample the Sierra is South Lake Tahoe’s premier food and wine festival — an annual September afternoon at Bijou Community Park (typically 1 to 4 p.m.) showcasing regional chefs, restaurants, wineries, breweries, distilleries, and local artisans. The Tahoe Chamber puts it on, and it’s become the definitive taste-of-Tahoe event: one ticket, dozens of tastes, live music, and shopping between pours.
What to expect
Think farm-to-Tahoe: Sierra Nevada producers pouring next to the chefs who cook with them. Recent editions have run around $65 for food-and-drink tickets, $45 food-only, with kids 8 and under free — check samplethesierra.com for the current year’s pricing. It sells well but rarely sells out; still, buying ahead beats the gate line. Pace yourself — it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and the artisan booths are worth the browsing time.
Tips from the cabin
Bijou Park is minutes from Tahoe Reset — bike over on the trail system and skip parking entirely. Go hungry and hit the savory booths first; the lines are shortest in the first hour. Bring a tote for artisan purchases. And make a day of it: morning at the Bijou dog park with the pups, festival in the afternoon, grill dinner back at the cabin.
What to taste
Come with a strategy. The winery booths pour Sierra-foothill reds that pair beautifully with mountain air — ask what’s new, the winemakers love to talk. The brewery row leans into Tahoe’s craft beer scene, which has quietly become one of California’s best. And the chef stations are the real draw: small plates from the restaurants you’ve been driving past all week, which doubles as reconnaissance for dinner later. Save room for the artisan food vendors — the jams, cheeses, and baked goods make excellent cabin provisions.
September in Tahoe
Mid-September is one of the best-kept secrets on the Tahoe calendar: warm days, cool nights, thinning crowds, and the lake at its warmest. Sample the Sierra weekend pairs beautifully with hiking, a Zephyr Cove cruise, or just the hot tub under early-fall stars. If you can only pick one shoulder-season weekend, pick this one.
