Heavenly Opening Day: First Chair
Every November, Heavenly Mountain Resort drops the rope on a new season — and Tahoe Reset sits 7.5 miles from first chair.
Heavenly’s opening day typically lands in late November (the resort targets around November 21, conditions permitting) — and it’s a genuine event, not just a date on a calendar. Expect a first-chair banner break on the California side, SWAG giveaways, a DJ spinning at the base, and the particular electricity of a mountain town shaking off seven months without snow.
What opening day is like
Early season means limited terrain — usually a handful of groomed runs served by a few lifts, with snowmaking doing the heavy lifting. But the stoke is real: season-pass holders who’ve been counting days, kids getting their first turns of the year, and that first-ride-up-the-gondola feeling. It’s also one of the least crowded marquee days of the season — nothing like the holiday crush that follows a month later.
Tips for opening weekend
Book lodging early — opening weekend still draws the faithful, and the best cabins go first. Arrive for the 9 a.m. opening if you want the banner break; the first hour has the best snow of the day. Bring layers: November summits run cold and the wind bites, even when the base feels mild. And set expectations — this is a celebration day, not a powder day. Ski a few hours, then be back at the cabin’s hot tub by mid-afternoon.
If opening gets delayed
It happens: a warm November can push the date. Heavenly announces changes on its website and social channels, usually with a few days’ notice. If you’ve booked the cabin for opening weekend and the lifts aren’t spinning, you’ve still got a trip — hike the Tahoe Keys shoreline, ride the Heavenly gondola for sightseeing if it’s running, or day-trip to Emerald Bay without summer crowds. And honestly? A long weekend at a cabin with a hot tub, a fireplace, and nobody else around is a fine consolation prize.
From the cabin
Tahoe Reset is 7.5 miles from Heavenly’s California base — typically 15 to 20 minutes. Leave early on opening morning; the mountain rewards the punctual, and you’ll be home for lunch while the latecomers are still circling for parking. Eight people, four bedrooms, a fireplace, and your dogs asleep by the fire: that’s how you open a season.
