Stay Near Heavenly Mountain Resort

Heavenly's lifts are 7.5 miles from Tahoe Reset — close enough for first chair, far enough that the village crowds don't follow you home.

Heavenly Mountain Resort is the big one on the south shore — a sprawling resort that straddles the California–Nevada state line, with runs that drop toward panoramic views of Lake Tahoe itself. Skiing here means carving turns with the bluest backdrop in American skiing. And at 7.5 miles from Tahoe Reset, it's your home mountain for the trip.

The mountain

Heavenly's terrain spreads across two states, with long groomers, steep chutes, and terrain parks for every level. The gondola from Heavenly Village is the signature experience: an eight-passenger ride climbing 2.4 miles to the mid-mountain lodge, with an observation deck at the top that might be the single best photo op in Tahoe. Non-skiers ride it too — the views alone are worth the ticket.

Summer at Heavenly

When the snow melts, the resort doesn't sleep. The scenic gondola runs all summer, plus a mountain coaster, tubing hill, ziplines, and hiking trails that start right at the top. It's one of the easiest big-mountain summer days in Tahoe: ride up, play around, ride down, and be back at the cabin's hot tub by dinner.

Après, then home

The base areas and Heavenly Village handle the après scene — live music, fire pits, and patios with the mountain looming behind. But here's the case for a cabin over a hotel room: eight people, a private hot tub, a gas fireplace, a full kitchen, and your dogs asleep by the fire. Soak the ski legs, cook a real dinner, stream something on the 75-inch TV, and wake up without a hallway full of strangers. That's the reset.

Getting to the lifts

From Tahoe Reset, Heavenly's California base is a straight shot of about 7.5 miles — typically 15 to 20 minutes, traffic depending. On big powder weekends, leave early; the mountain rewards the punctual. In summer, the same drive delivers you to the gondola and the village for a full day above the lake.

First-timer tips

New to Heavenly? Book lessons in advance — the ski school sells out on holiday weekends, and a morning lesson transforms a first day. Rent gear in town the night before so your first morning starts at the lift, not in a rental line. Dress in layers: summit temperatures run noticeably colder than the base, and Tahoe's famous bluebird sun is deceptive. Start on the gentler California-side groomers to find your legs, then work toward the steeps and the Nevada-side runs as the day unfolds.

The view from the top

What separates Heavenly from every other resort in the region is the panorama. From the upper mountain, Lake Tahoe fills the horizon — a sheet of impossibly blue water ringed by snow-covered peaks. Few ski views in North America compete. Ride the gondola at least once without skis, if only for the observation deck. Photographers: late afternoon light on the lake, with skiers carving below, is the shot that defines a Tahoe winter.

Dining on the mountain

You don't have to descend for a good meal. Heavenly's mid-mountain lodges serve hearty skier fare — think burgers, chili, and hot chocolate with a view — while the base areas offer everything from quick slices to sit-down lunches. Our advice: eat slightly off-peak (11 a.m. or after 1:30) to dodge the lift-rush lines. Then save your appetite for the cabin, where the double ovens and 5-burner gas stove turn a grocery run into a feast for eight.
